The Tradition of the Welsh Love Spoon.

Love Spoons have a long history .... but nowadays can be bought for all occasion. They are high on the tourists' list of genuine Welsh crafts to be bought as souvenirs.

The history of the Love Spoon goes back hundreds of years. In Cardiff there is a Welsh Folk Museum ... which houses among many other interesting exhibits, a section on Love Spoons and their history .... in this exhibit is one particular spoon that dates back to 1667.

Originally they were carved by young men as a token of affection to the girl they loved.

There are many spoon designs .... each design has it's own meaning .... here are a few of them.

This is a traditional Celtic design ... the carving symbolises 2 lives that are joined together, on the handle near the spoon you can see a Horseshoe, which of course is considered lucky.

Celebration of Marriage Love Spoon

A New Baby Spoon
