Come and see my photos of Llandudno's Bronze Age Coppermine ...

Please be patient, this page might be a bit slow to load, there are a lot of images on this page.

We visited Llandudno's Bronze Age CopperMine in April 2004. Llandudno is a lovely town that's on the North Wales coast, it has many elegant Victorian and Edwardian buildings, it's a truly favourite place of mine to visit.

In Llandudno there are two mountains ... the Great Orme and the Little Orme. On the Great Orme are a number of tourist activities ... they include ... a Ski Centre which offers a wide range of slope-based activities that includes a 300m dry ski slope ... and a 700m Cresta Toboggan ride. There is also a 9 hole pitch and putt mini golf course ... cable cars ... the famous Great Orme Tramway ... that is Britain's only cable-hauled, public road tramway that still uses the original Victorian carriages ... and then there's my favourite attraction ... The Bronze Age CopperMine.

Uncovered in 1987 during a scheme to landscape an area of the the Great Orme with a view to build a car park, the copper mines discovered below the ground represent one of the most astounding and exciting archaeological discoveries of recent time. Parts of the mine date back 4,000 years to the Bronze Age. They change our views about the ancient people of Britain and their civilized and structured society 2,000 years before the Romans invaded our shores. Over the past 17 years mining engineers, cavers and archaeologists have been slowly uncovering tunnels and large areas of the surface landscape to reveal what is now thought to be the largest Prehistoric mine so far discovered in the World.

Now you know a bit about the coppermine please come and visit with me through my photographs. You will find the quality of the underground photos a bit on the poor side ... even though I used a flash, it was that dark down there I still had to lighten some of the photos with the help of my computer.

Walking down to the mine site
The visitors centre, shop and amenities
Path down to the mine entrance
The entrance to the mine is below the sign
Showing the entrance and exit to the mine
This is my daughter, she was 10 when this photo was taken, that shows how small the mine entrance is
Inside the mine
Some of the tunnels were very small
We headed down ... a total of 60 feet altogether
Tunnel ... too small to even crawl through
Another small tunnel
The tunnels were very dark
After going down 60 feet ... we had to go back up 60 feet
The bridge shows the height of the ground when the mine was discovered
A lot of excavating has taken place
This shows the three modes of transport up the Great Orme ... car, tram and cable car
A closer view of one of the trams and a cable car
We traveled down the mountain on a tram ... you can see the low cloud over the beach
