Official Rules
QUALIFICATIONS
1. Any Dark Angel story that has been publicly posted to any website or mailing
list prior to June 15, 2002 are eligible for the awards.
2. Definitions of eligibility for categories:
1. Best Microstory. Any story of any genre, of a length 5K and under.
2. Best Short Story. Any story of any genre, of a lengh 6K to 20K.
3. Best Story. Any story of any genre, of a length 21K to 199K.
4. Best Novel. Any story of any genre, of a length 100K and above.
5. Best Humor. Any story of any length, categorized by either the author as humor or that the nominator perceives to be humorous.
6. Best Episodic. Any story of any length. Plot, style and characterization should be consistent with episodes of Dark Angel that have aired.
7. Best Pre-Series. Any story of any length where the setting of the entire story takes place before the first non-flashback scene of the pilot episode. In other words, any story set entirely before 2019.
8. Best Max/Logan romance. Any story of any length focusing on or featuring the romance between Max and Logan.
9. Best Other Romance. Any story of any length focusing on or featuring a romance that is not Max/Logan. This includes stories featuring a Max/anyone romance, a Logan/anyone romance, or an anyone/anyone romance. Both straight and slash romances are eligible for this category. Because a story may feature more than one romance, please specify which romantic pairing in a story you wish to nominate. Sample vote:

10. Best Max Characterization. Any story of any length of any genre with a really good characterization of Max.
11. Best Use of a Canon Character. Any story of any length of any genre that makes good use of a canon character who is not Max. A canon character is any character who has been both SEEN and NAMED in any episode of Dark Angel. Jondy and Zane are canon characters. Sandeman is a canon character. The three as-yet-unnamed '09 escapees are not canon characters and should be nominated in the original character category. Because a story may feature more than one canon character who is not Max, please specify which character in a story you wish to nominate. Example:
BEST CANON CHARACTER

12. Best Original Character. Any story of any length of any genre that makes good use of an original character. An original character is one of the author's creation, who has never been seen AND named in any episode of Dark Angel. [Characters who have been named but not seen qualify as original characters: Det. Sung's wife and kids; Logan's parents; Lydecker's wife; Buddy's wife Mary, etc.]
Website award: Best Archive - Any website that serves as an archive for Dark Angel fanfiction written by more than one author. Archives featuring the work of only one author do not qualify. Archives featuring both Dark Angel fiction and fiction for other shows (i.e., Fanfiction.net) do not qualify.
Website award: Best Informational Dark Angel site - Any web site other than the official Fox site which the nominator feels should be recognized for its usefulness in providing information about Dark Angel. Preferably should contain information useful in writing or researching fanfiction.
Website award: Best Recreational Dark Angel site - Any web site other than the official Fox site which the nominator feels should be recognized.
NOMINATION PROCEDURES
1. One ballot per person. Please submit all nominations for all categories on one ballot.
2. You may nominate up to FIVE stories in each category.
3. You may NOT nominate a story written by yourself.
4. Please provide a link for every story you nominate.
5. If nominating in a category that requires further information, such as "specify pairing" or "specify character" please do so on your ballot. Nominations without this information provided may be discarded.
6. Please submit your nominations in a format similar to the examples below:

FINAL BALLOT PROCEDURES
1. One ballot per person. Please submit all votes for all categories on one ballot.
2. You may vote for ONE nominated story in each category.
3. You MAY vote for a nominated story written by yourself.
4. All votes must be submitted no later than one a.m., eastern standard time, July 15, 2002.
OTHER INFORMATION
1. Nominations must be submitted before 1 a.m., eastern standard time on June 30, 2002. A list of nominees will be posted as soon as possible after the close of the nomination period.
2. Final ballots must be submitted before 1 a.m., eastern standard time, on July 15, 2002. A list of winners will be posted as soon as possible after the close of the final ballot period.
3. The management reserves the right to disqualify any ballots or nominations within a ballot that are unclear as to the voter's intent.
4. All ties shall stand.
5. Any story that receives fewer than 2 nominations/votes in a particular category will be dropped from that category.
6. Any category that fails to receive more than three nominees will be dropped from the final awards.
7. The management reserves the right to move a story nominated in the wrong category into the right category. (Example: "Girls Kick Ass" written by Joanna Q. Public is nominated for "Best Original Character - Mia". Mia does not qualify as an original character, but she does qualify as a Canon Character. The nomination will be counted in the "Best Canon Character" category.)
8. The management reserves the right to make adjustments to categories after nominations have been received. These adjustments will always be to make it possible for more specific awards to be given. (Example: Eight stories are nominated for the "Best Other Romance" category. Four of the qualified stories are straight romance and four are slash romance. The management will split the nominations into two new categories for the final award ballot: Best Straight Romance and Best Slash Romance.)
9. All decisions of management are final. All nomination and final ballots will be retained by management in case of any question or challenge.
NOTE ON FILE SIZE
3 Ways to find out the file size (k) of your story:
1. Save it as a text file. How big is it?
2. If using Microsoft Word, click on Tools, then on Word Count. The "Characters (no spaces)" number will be just about equal to the number of kilobytes the text file will be. (So if the Characters (no spaces) = 2348, your story is 2.3k.)
3. 1k=180 words, approximately. So if you have the word count of your story (for example, if you’re using Fanfiction.net), divide that number by 180 to reach the file size. (word count/180=k) (source of information: http://www.electric- words.com/dict/k/kilobyte.html)
Generally speaking, a 5k story will be 900 words. A 20K story will be 3,600 words. A 100k story will be 18,000 words.
