These are the first projects I started helping mom with this spring. We began in early May when the weather was still chilly. The flowerbeds were already in place along the house, containing mostly orange lilies, delphiniums and irises. But there was a wooden border surrounding it all that was rotting. We needed to replace that, so while we were at it, we reshaped the beds, making them wider and giving them these scalloped and 'teardrop' shapes. We dug up the ground and removed the rocks, then added a green plastic border along the edge. Afterward, mom cleaned the weeds from the existing flowerbeds and we started planting in the newly dug soil. Some of the plants we added were white lilies, hostas, chives, lemon geraniums, dusty miller, purple wildflowers, and a few different shrubs. I also added radishes which I had grown indoors from seeds while it was still cold outside.

These are the flowerbeds in the very back of the large side of the yard. This side of the yard has had very little improvement done on it, save for the flowerbeds by the house and the lawn. This is the first year we have really started changing things around.
In the top photos, the fence behind the flowerbeds had surrounded our garden until now. We decided to downsize the garden and since mom had made the fence herself, we wanted to find an alternate use for it rather than discarding it. As you can see, we used the leftover lattice to form this boundary between the flowerbeds and the woods behind them. Mom dug up most of the dirt for the beds and we picked out rocks and added the green plastic border. We planted delphiniums, dianthus, and peonies in the bed pictured at right. In the photos above, mom planted one red and one lavender rose bush, one pink and one white lilac bush, and strawberries.
The bed below by the greenhouse was done by mom after I left for the summer. She dug up the dirt and sifted the rocks, then added the plastic border and planted some flowers inside and grass all around.
