U.S. terrorism knows no bounds, even the murder of their own people and staged acts of terrorism in their own cities are acts considered justifiable if to further the political power of it's leader's and defeat opposition. In 1962, Operation Northwood was drafted by the United States Joint Chiefs of Staff. This plan was designed to create a feeling of anger towards the people of a little island called Cuba, thereby creating support for a war effort against the island. Cuban became a socialist republic in 1959 and although this improved the standard of living for it's people, it ruined relations with the United States. The U.S. had supported the former regime of dictator Batista, also known as "The Hitler of Latin America," who had oppressed his own people and used acts of murder and genocide to keep his grip on power. But when the Communist Party nationalized holdings in Cuba formerly belonging to U.S. corporations that alone was enough to cause the U.S. government to feel the need to take drastic measures. Operation Northwood reportedly included such atrocities as the assassination of Cuban émigrés, sinking boats of Cuban refugee's, hijacking planes, blowing up U.S. ships and staging terrorist attacks in U.S. cities which would later be blamed on Cuba. The proposal had the approval of all Joint Chiefs of Staff and was presented to president Kennedy’s defense secretary in March 1962. But it was rejected by the civilian leadership and hidden away for the last 40 years. Although Operation Northwood was never carried out, the U.S. had already backed one attempt by Cuban exiles to depose the popular Cuban government. This was the Bay of Pigs invasion which failed due to lack of public support within Cuba and lack of military assistance from the United States. The United States intended to replace Cuba's highly popular socialist government with a military dictatorship lead by the United States. There is also some evidence to suggest that the United States has used biological warfare, and sabotage of Cuban crops to attack Cuba. It is well known that the CIA has made several attempts on Fidel Castro's life, and U.S. economic sanctions against the island amount to economic terrorism on the part of the United States. A government willing to go to any ends to overthrow a harmless "enemy". Willing to murder its own people in order to gain domestic and foreign support for military action. A government not interested in the well being of Cuba's people but in the interests of U.S. corporations. A policy that is still part of the U.S. government, strongly endorsed by Mr. Bush himself. When it comes to terrorism the United States government still reigns supreme.
