FOR RELEASE: March 16, 2003

CALL FOR EMERGENCY PROTEST AGAINST WAR

The Prince George Peace Coalition is calling on the citizens of Prince George to attend an emergency protest for peace should full scale bombing of Iraq occur.

There have already been a number of protests against this impending war in the preceding months. The most recent of these protests was held on February 15, 2003. That protest brought out approximately 250 people according to most sources. The P.G. Peace Coalition hopes for an even better turnout this time around.

The war on Iraq is not one for democracy or freedom; it is not a war for the best interests of the people of Iraq, Canada or even the United State of America. It will be a war for oil, a war for money. Without the approval of the U.N., and without any conclusive evidence of the danger posed by Iraq, the government’s of the United States and Britain intend to launch a pre-emptive war which will cost the lives of thousands of innocent Iraqi’s. U.N. sanctions on Iraq already kill thousands of people per year. Over 1.2 million Iraqi’s have died because of the sanctions since June 1997, according to U.N. statistics.

It is the responsibility of the people of the world to show their opposition to this war and to call for an end to the effective genocide being committed against the Iraqi people. We ask the people of Prince George to write, or e-mail, their elected representatives and other political leaders and express their opposition to the war.

Should the full scale bombing of Iraq begin, the people of Prince George should meet at the Prince George courthouse at 1:00pm on the Saturday following the beginning of the bombing.
