On Saturday 1st July, the Pride of Ballinran travelled to Scotland to take part in the County Grand Lodge of Glasgow annual Boyne Celebration parade to Glasgow Green.
For the fifth consecutive year, we were there to accompany the Anderston District Lodge No 13 in the parade. They are not be the biggest lodge in the parade by any means, but they are certainly one of the most dedicated and the band are proud to be associated with them.
This is a large parade, with an estimated 18,000 Orangemen accompanied by well over 60 bands, taking well over an hour and a half to pass a given point. As usual, Northern Ireland was well represented in the parade, with many of the top “Melody” and “Blood & Thunder” bands from around the country taking part.
The weather forecast had not been looking too favourable early in the week, and Friday’s downpours did not bode well for the parade, but in the event the sun shone down both on the parade and evidently on The Pride of Ballinran who were delighted to win the trophy for “Best Visiting Band” – the only trophy that bands from outside Scotland can be awarded.
The band would like to take this opportunity to publicly thank Anderston District for their ongoing support; “The Pride of Paisley Accordion Band” for lending us a pair of cymbals at such short notice; and the Blackskull Flute Band from Glasgow for the donation they made to the funds we are currently raising for the Cancer Centre at Belfast City Hospital. Their kindness is much appreciated.
