Friday June 24th saw the band leave Kilkeel 5am for the annual pilgrimage to Glasgow which also served this year as Albert's stag weekend. As well as the band we were lucky enough to have some local celebrities on the bus this year including David Sands, Craic McKee, Jonathan Newell, Adrian Charlton and Glenloughan's finest, Lawrence 'Fritzy' Hamilton. Not really sure what went on the Friday morning as I didn't arrive until that evening myself but was informed of good behaviour on all accounts by the lads.
The band travelled over with 5 Colour Party, 8 Drummers, and 24 Flutes (I think) and paraded the usual route from Anderston, Blythewood Square and onto Glasgow Green. Band played really well today, fluting in particular was very tuneful although lacking a bit of volume toward the end of the parade, think we ran out of puff in the heat. Especially enjoyed playing a few numbers for the crowd up in Blythewood Square on the atmosphere coming out of Glasgow Green in the return parade, fantastic as always. Big thank you to the lodge who treat us like royalty every year, needless to say we'll be back again. Such was our position in the parade we missed seeing the Ulster bands who came over but did catch a glimpse of the Miller Memorial who were playing to their usual high standards.
Most of the lads ventured to Blackskull's hall (The Bunker) that evening and were joined by some of the lads from Imperial Corps of Drums Liverpool and Castlederg YL who all enjoyed a good singsong. Dr Nannett caused a bit of a shock where he was seen purchasing drinks at the bar but it was later explained he had stolen his poor wife's handbag. Albert also put everyone through his rendition of In the Ghetto to finish off the night. More importantly though Loyalism was taken to a new level by the formation of the Goat Culture...watch this space...
