A report on the Vidyarambham Function

at Krishanattam Kalari, Kshetra Kala Nilayam, Guruvayur, 12th October 2005.
A. Purushothaman

7.45 a.m. Senior Asan T.P. Narayana Pisharoty brought the Yavana's Sword and the palm leaf manuscript (wrapped in a red cloth) tied together, from the temple after puja. This was kept for puja at Kalari. Puja was performed in the Kalari, lighting lamps, burning camphor etc. Shri P.C.C. Elayath, the supdt., gave dakshina and prostrated before the priest (a troupe member) and the priest blessed him. Books kept for puja were returned to the students.

Asan Sri T.P.N. Pisharoty, sat on a mat, wrote 'Hari Sri' on the floor with his finger and opened the palm leaf manuscript. He read out the following lines:
Srnu nanu Canura, nrpabhimatam
karaneeyamitiha samanumatam

(Krishna to Canura in the play Kamsavadham)

(It is believed that these line foretell the prospects for the troupe in the coming year.)

The dancers stood in 2 lines (Asans close to the lamp) and performed a few steps.
Then, the dancers, four at a time, turn by turn, took the shields and swords kept for puja and performed typical dance steps of Yavana.

Maddalam Asans took out the two maddalams and hung them around their waists. Asan Shri T.P.N. Pisharoty took the chengala and Asan Shri Mohanan took the Elattalam.

All the musicians (one line by each in turn) sang the first four slokas of Krishnagiti, starting with Jagati, Premnasa, Souvarna and Vikrantha.

The first scene of the Play Avataram was performed (singing slokas and padams) with one dancer as Brahma and four dancers as Bhumidevi.

The members gave dakshina to Asans, prostrated before them and received their blessings.

The function concluded at 8.45 am.
