BIRTHDATE: July 23, 1967 BIRTHPLACE: Fairport, New York MARITAL STATUS: ???? WHY HE DESERVES HIS BIG BREAK: This page was originally going to be called PHIL: A TRIBUTE TO PHILIP SEYMOUR HOFFMAN, but it was decided that it wouldn't be fair to the rest of the underappreciated actors in the world. Nevertheless, he has the dubious honor of being our favorite actor here at THAT GUY. Born in upstate New York, Philip Seymour Hoffman is a graduate of the Tisch School of Drama. After working extensively in high school and college theater, his first film role of note was Chris O'Donnell's sniveling roommate in Scent of a Woman (1992). Since then, he's turned in performances far more memorable and capable than anything Brad Pitt or Leonardo DiCaprio have ever done. Standout performances include Meg Ryan's rehab partner Gary in When a Man Loves a Woman, Scotty the lovesick production assistant in Boogie Nights, a lonely obscene phone caller in Happiness, Jason Robards' gentle nurse in Magnolia, Jude Law's obnoxious pal Freddie Miles in The Talented Mr. Ripley, and real life rock critic Lester Bangs in Almost Famous. That's a hefty resume for someone who's only been in movies for less than ten years. Sadly, it's what we at THAT GUY love most about Philip Seymour Hoffman--his teddy bear cute looks--that probably prevent him from landing on the cover of People magazine's 'Sexiest Man Alive' issue. He neither possesses the she-male looks of Leonardo, or the overinflated Fabio facade, so Hollywood will most likely continue to cast him as the wacky best friend or the lonely goof. That's okay--we wouldn't kick him out of bed for eating crackers. |
