WHY HE DESERVES HIS BIG BREAK: |
Well, technically, Steve has already had his big break, starring as "Rockhound" in 1998's Armageddon. However, though Armageddon brought in bazillions of dollars at the box office, we at THAT GUY thought it sucked major moose, and frankly, we think he deserved better. |
Born in Brooklyn, Buscemi's first major role was as a young gay man dying of AIDS in 1986's Parting Glances. Though he won critical acclaim for the performance, Buscemi spent the next few years toiling in less than stellar projects such as Heart of Midnight, Arena Brains, and Slaves of New York. His career really took off after Joel and Ethan Coen cast him as Mink in 1990's Miller's Crossing, and thus a great partnership was born. Buscemi had roles of varying sizes in the next four Coen Brothers films, including Barton Fink, The Hudsucker Proxy, The Big Lebowski, and our personal favorite, Fargo. |

But it was his pivotal role as Mr. Pink in 1992's Reservoir Dogs that really introduced Buscemi to "indie" film fans everywhere. Whether it was because of his explanation of why he doesn't tip coffee shop waitresses, or his insistence that he's the only "professional" amongst his criminal cohorts, Buscemi virtually stole the movie from long-established co-star Harvey Keitel. He later won an Independent Spirit Award for the performance. |
Buscemi seems somewhat out of place in such blockbuster no-brainers as Escape From L.A., Con-Air, and the aforementioned Armageddon, and his performances seem to suggest that he feels a bit out of place himself. He's also made memorable cameo appearances in most of Adam Sandler's films, including Billy Madison, playing an ex-classmate of Sandler's who is attempting to assassinate everybody that ever picked on him in school. |

Recently, Buscemi has been using his formidable talents behind the camera as well, writing and directing the critically acclaimed Trees Lounge, and directing 2000's The Animal Factory, as well as episodes of TV's Homicide and Oz. We at THAT GUY are pretty sure that Steve Buscemi can no longer be considered a true "that guy", but he's definitely one of the originals. |
