WHY HE DESERVES HIS BIG BREAK: |
We like to think of Adrien Brody as the dark twin of Brad Pitt. With looks that are both attractive an unique, Brody has specialized in playing young guys who have good hearts but usually end up in trouble. Though he won critical acclaim playing a juvenile delinquent in 1993's King of the Hill, it wasn't until 1998 that the world at large got a look at Brody's talents. It looked as if he would get his break when he was cast in Terence Malick's The Thin Red Line, but, sadly, his role was cut to precisely one line, the rest of it ending up with the rest of the seven million hours of footage edited from the film. |

Brody gave the standout performance in Spike Lee's Summer of Sam, playing Ritchie, an aspiring musician who alienates his childhood friends when he embraces the punk rock scene, even adopting a British accent. The film's downbeat ending is made all the more affecting by Ritchie's painful realization that his former friends believe his punk appearance makes him a likely murder suspect. Critics who liked Summer of Sam praised it mostly for the accurate portrayal of 1970's New York City, while critics who disliked it blasted it for its gratuitous sex and violence. Sadly, most of them overlooked Brody's memorable performance. |

Showing his remarkable versatility, Brody's next film after Summer of Sam was Barry Levison's Liberty Heights, where he played a nice Jewish boy in 1950's Baltimore. The staff of THAT GUY would love to see Adrien Brody in a movie playing the less intense brother of Wes Bentley. |
