Why create a site about Ponte de Sor?

After being online for a few years I came upon a fellow pontessorense's (inhabitant of Ponte de Sor) web page among the results of a search. I decided to attempt a new search, this time actually focusing on finding other pontessorenses' pages. The results were quite numerous, but the quality wasn't the best.

For the most part the results were references to the city in governmental departments' pages, others were in pages of corporations with offices or associates in Ponte de Sor, others weren't related at all. There were also quite a number of recipes from INCOPIL (a pimento processing factory based in Ponte de Sor) that appeared over and over again. Pontessorenses' pages were very rare and the few I found were of a personal nature, i.e., they focused on the author's profession, hobbies, etc. Information about the city itself was nowhere to be found.

In early 1999 I decided to give that search another shot in hopes of finding some changes for the better. Roughly two years had gone by since my last attempt. There were a few more legitimate results, but most were still in government departments or organisms' pages. etc. Unfortunately the web spaces made available to Ponte de Sor's City Hall were still waiting to be filled-in.

Someone would end up doing what I'm doing, I just got tired of waiting for someone else to do it and decided to do it myself. Therfore, whether good or bad, this is the best I can do at this time. I hope you enjoy it, and if you don't plesase let me know, preferably along with an offer to help solve whatever problem you perceive.

What is this site's objective?

I attempted to create a point of reference for all Pontessorenses and all others who may search information about the city or its surroundings on the Web. I would like the site to continue growing and evolving, always keeping a dynamic edge that invites multiple and regular visits.

Because I live abroad my hability to gather current information about Ponte de Sor is somewhat hindered. The contribution of Pontessorenses is, therefore, not only necessary, but also indispensable for the quality and timeliness of the information available on the site.

Who is the Webmaster?

My name is João Vicente, better known as Cabedal (both a family name and shoe leather...hey, I've seen worse). I was born and grew up in Ponte de Sor before coming to Canada in 1989.

The vast majority of what you see here was created by myself, including most graphics, with the exception of the entrance's flags and a few other icons I plan to introduce such as the search's magnifying glass. Please bear this in mind and avoid using my graphics elsewhere. If you really like something let me know and we may find a solution that is agreeable to both of us.

As I mentioned before, it is extremely hard for me to get information on Ponte de Sor without the help of someone living in Ponte de Sor due to the lack of information on the Internet as well as local libraries and so on. Apart from that, I will endeavour to share all the best resources that I believe can be o f use or interesting to my fellow Pontessorenses and other visitors to this site.

How can I contribute to Ponte de Sor's site?
This site is open to everyone's contribution. Please address any inquiries or contributions to ponte_de_sor@hotmail.com.

Of course your criticism and suggestions are welcome and will be taken into consideration.

I would like to offer a space where people can post their opinions, information, classifieds, etc. I wouldn't call it an e-zine because there wouldn't be any deadlines per se, nor would it have a regular publishing schedule, but rather work as a storage of pertinent information that would benefit the site and give the authors a chance at exposure.

I would also like to offer a space where multimedia works of all stripes, from the tradicional photography and music to shockwave, digital manipulation of traditional media, etc. would find a home.

Let your imagination fly and share your skill, your hobby, even something of interest you may have come across on the Internet or an article you may have read in a newspaper or magazine. As long as there is no copy rights violation and the material isn't offensive, anything is possible. Anything is possible when someone is willing and takes a chance.
