On January 15, 2005, PIP Chapter 22 met at the Italian Community Center, 631 E. Chicago Street, Milwaukee, Wisconsin at 10:30 a.m.
The following members were in attendance: Michael Aliota, Ginny Balistreri, Frank Balistrieri, John Balistreri and Patricia Stein, Dick and Nancy Boudreau (4317), Nancy Bushman, Kristin Bushman, Joe and Nancy D’Acquisto, Joe Dentice, Michelle Giuliani (2357), Lisa Joecks, John and Arlene Jorgensen, George Koleas (1527), Jackie Maggiore (4391), Domenica Podewils, Marie Roth (766), Adele Tarantino McGrath and her Mother, Anna Alioto Tarantino, Steve Scalzo, David and Tana Salvaggio (4835). Also in attendance were guests Pat and Tony Busalacchi, Andrea Busalacchi Gandioso, Tom Alioto, Steve Alioto, Bob and Carol Rentmaster.
At our last meeting, we were asked to pass around a picture to help identify the family in the picture. Ginger Schmidt suggests that they may possibly being part of the Sorce family.
Dan Niemiec (2304), the leader of PIP Chapter 27, Chicago North, has informed us that his chapter will be hosting an Italian Genealogy Conference at the Italian Cultural Center in Stone Park, IL on September 17th, 2005. This conflicts directly with our September 17th meeting. At our April 9 meeting, we will discuss what to do with our planned meeting. If the conference takes place as planned, we will try to arrange transportation for those that would like to attend the conference.
To keep our website accurate, members are asked to review the website surname list to update and correct surnames and locations. The surnames of any inactive members will be removed and stored in an inactive file.
Festa Italiana in Milwaukee Wisconsin will be July 21 through July 24, 2005. The focus of this year’s Festa Italiana will be the Piemonte region. We decided that we will offer to provide display material in the form of posters. We will not ask for a display table or display space.
Michael Alioto would like to plan another reunion for families from the Santa' Elia, Santa Flavia, Porticello, Solanto, Solunto, and other towns located around Palermo. Surnames from this area include Alioto (also Aliota, Arioto and Galioto), Balistreri (also Balistrieri), Bellanti, Busalacchi, Dentice, Machi, Tarantino, SanFilippo and many other related families. Tana Salvaggio (4835) is participating in a Milwaukee County Genealogical Society project to index newspaper birth, marriage and death notices from the Milwaukee Daily Journal. The project needs volunteers. To volunteer Roger Cobb 414-475-5579
Tana Salvaggio (4835) recommended a new book entitled “Guide to the Genealogical Resources of Italy - Region of Sicily”, by George E. Ott. It provides an index of all incorporated towns/comuni and hamlets/frazioni in the region and a wealth of information for each incorporated town/comune including a listing of the Family History Library collection for each town with microfilm numbers. Joe Dentice is coordinating “Si Parla Italiano” at the Italian Community Center. “Si Parla Italiano” meets the fourth Monday of each month at 6:30 p.m. in the Board Room and speaks only Italian for two hours.
We were joined by Martin Hintz, the author of the new book Images of America: Italian Milwaukee with a Forward by Mario A. Carini, President of the Italian Community Center. Italian Milwaukee contains dozens of old and contemporary photographs. Look for friends and relatives from among Milwaukee's Italian families! It is a wonderful book that belongs in the library of anyone with family members in Milwaukee. Some of our members and their families are in the book. Martin shared some of his experiences writing his book. He brought copies of his book and signed copies for members. The book is also available at area bookstores for $20 or by ordering directly from Martin Hintz, $25 covers postage and handling.
