George Koleas (#1527)
Pointers In Person, Chapter 22, met at the Italian Community Center on Saturday, April 10, 1999. Present at the meeting were, Charles and Madeline Carome (930), Tina Favero, Mave Freyberg, Jean Karls, George Koleas (1527), Rudy and Marlene Magnarini, Joe Mirenda, Barbara Roberts(1202), Marie Roth (766), Margaret Schutz (2149) and Susan White.
We began by reviewing correspondence we have received since our last meeting and reviewing an article we had published in The Italian Times, The Italian Community Center Newsletter entitled “Researching Your Italian Roots: How To Locate Your Family's Village and What To Do When You Get There”, with advice collected from our last meeting.
Next, we shared information about new resources that have become available. Italian Community Center historian and member, Mario Carini with Austin Goodrich, had just published a new book entitled, “ Milwaukee’s Italians; The Early Years”. This book is the first of two planned volumes that tells the story of Italians in Milwaukee. In this volume Mario Carini tells of the story of the Italians in Milwaukee from the arrival of the first Italians to approximately the 1920’s. The second volume is planned to tell the story from the late 1920’s through the start of World War II. There are approximately 110 pages of text, and 33 pages of appendix with a variety of interesting facts. It is a must read for anyone interested in Italians in Milwaukee. The book can be ordered for $12.95 plus $3.00 shipping for the first book and $2.00 shipping for each additional book from The Italian Community Center, 631 E. Chicago Street, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, 53202. Wisconsin residents must add 5.65% tax.
New computer resources continue to be announced. Family Tree Maker has just released Passenger and Immigration lists: Italians to America, 1880-1893 on CD-ROM for $49.95. This CD is published in cooperation with Scholarly Resources. More information can be obtained from www.FamilyTreeMaker.com/spring.
Barbara Roberts (1202) passed around the Winter 1999 issue of Genealogical Computing , published by Ancestry Incorporated. This magazine was full of updates on various genealogical programs, new CD ROM releases and advice on using computers to help your research. Further details are available at www.ancestry.com. She also passed around a book entitled “Guide To Genealogical Collections in the Milwaukee Metropolitan Area, (Ref) Z1352 M5 G85x 1990. This book is available at many Milwaukee area libraries and by inter-library loan. The book tells the location of various genealogical records throughout the Milwaukee metropolitan area, the extent of the holdings at each location and the hours of operations.
George Koleas (1527) will be attending the Milwaukee County
Genealogical Society 11th Workshop on April 17, 1999.
A flyer about or chapter, including a listing of the surnames we are
researching, will be made available on the “freebie” table.
We each shared our recent research progress. Jean Karls shared with us a copy of a permission to immigrate from Italy certificate that gave amazing detail about her ancestors appearance. Marie Roth(766) and Charles Carome (930) helped Mave Freyberg translate a letter. Tina Favero and Rudy Magnarini discovered that they grew up in the same neighborhood. Marie Roth (766), Margaret Schulz (2149) and Susan White all reported that they would soon make trips to Italy.
A reminder to all that The Italian Community Center will be hosting it's fourth annual "Taste of Italy" event on Sunday, April 18, 1999, from noon to 5:00 p.m.. The event is open to the public. Anyone is welcome to sample a variety of Italian foods for only $1.00 per sample.
