At sixteen we met, in high school, no less,
We were friends immediately, oh yes!
We bonded at once, so many things we shared,
The trials of high school, the things that made us scared.

Our hopes and our dreams,
Our outrageous schemes.
Our nights over at the other's home,
Ironing your hair, making it easier to comb.

Graduation came, we soon parted ways,
Soon gone away were our high school days.
Now we had begun a whole new phase,
We married and had our children to raise.

I would run into you occasionally in our commutes,
We'd laugh and share our families' disputes.
I had married the guy of my dreams,
Life was wonderful, or so it would seem.

Your husband drank and you couldn't cope,
You sought your freedom, gaining renewed hope.
My husband took up with his best friend's wife,
So I found myself having to begin a new life.

I thought we could never grow closer,
Then what we had been in school.
But the adult world was not kind to us,
We learned to allow our heads, not our hearts, to rule..

Ah, now the friendship flourished,
Reaching out to the other in support.
What we had missed after high school we regained,
The bond even closer now, the forever sort.

We have been together, stronger than ever,
Holding the other up, sharing the tears.
The loss of your Mom, Penny, Dooter, and others,
That we knew through the years..

And now, once again, I am alone,
And who is there for me again?
You, of course, reassuring me, calming me,
Telling me to draw from my strength within..

If anyone were to ask me, have you a true friend?
I would have to answer, yes, and never hesitate..
You have been everything to me, Kathy,
My confidante, my sister, and my soul mate...

This poem is in your honor,
For being so unselfish, loving and good.
For the times I could not stand alone,
It was these times you held me so I could..

I love you, Kathy
Thank you for being my friend...
