Trade Blanket

The trade blanket tradition began with the Native Americans and the French fur traders. It was a method by which the two parties could trade using only hand motions and few words.

A blanket is placed in the center of the circle of traders. The first person places an item he wishes to trade in the center of the blanket. Beginning to his left, each person places an item they wish to offer on the blanket in front of them. After each person in the circle has a chance to place an item for consideration, the first person considers each offering. He may accept an offer, refuse all offers or ask for someone to sweeten the pot. If he accepts an offer, he gives his item to the person and shakes hands and says "good trade". All other offers are removed by the owner of that item. The trade continues following the same procedure until all have finished trading.

It is perfectly acceptable to offer 'green stuff' ($$$) if one does not have an item to trade. Suggested items for trade: tools, books, wood, carvings, craft items, tool boxes, etc.

This is an entertainment event - not just a tool swap. There has been a lot of laughter heard at previous trade blankets. The more people that attend, the funnier it gets. 1
