Paul Merrill Journal assignment #2

1) One paragraph summary of the key idea summarizing
the topic of the week.
This week, we basically talked about Reason. Reason
is defined as the power to think in such a way that we
proceed from what we know to what we do not yet know.
Reason is also the last and most important kind of
knowledge. The other two being experience and
Authority. A couple of other key topics that we
covered this week were: The Five Common Thinking
Errors. These five errors are 1) Non sequitur meaning
"it does not follow". One Example from the text is -
All men are mortal Socrates was a man so therefore all
men are Socrates. It doesn't follow logically.
2)False/Vague premises are things that cannot or may
not be true. 3) Ad Hominem which literally means
against the person, can be show when someone attacks
another with words. 4) Begging the Question means
that someone tries to demonstrate a point by already
assuming something is true and an example of this
would be "I believe God exists because he created us."
5) Red Herrings are basically something that comes
up that is completely off topic and is used to change
the subject.
