Dr. Tom Dooley

Tom Dooley was born in Saint Louis, MO on January 17th, 1927.  He was the oldest of three boys and attended a Catholic grade school.  From 1940-1944 he attened Saint Louis University High School.  As a teen, he excelled at piano,(briefly attended Julliard) swimming, and track.  After high school, he went to The univesity of Notre Dame, but abruptly stopped  his undergraduate studies to enlist in the U.S. Navy in 1944.  After his stint with the Navy, he went back to Notre Dame. Dooley went back home and attended St. Louis University where he got his Doctor of Medicine in 1953.  Shortly after, he took a job as a doctor in the Navy aboard the U.S.S. Montague.  In his stint with the navy, Dooley helped move refugees from Notrth Vietnam to South Vietnam.  After this, he wrote a book entitled Deliver Us From Evil which dealt with his experiences in Vietnam.  He stepped down from his postition in the Navy and with the money he made form the book sales, he flew to Southeast Asia and built a hospital in Laos.  Again, he wrote a book about his experiences called The Edge of Tomorrow.
Dooley then went back to America and orgainized Medical International Cooperation Orgainization (MEDICO) to train locals in Laos and other countries to run hospitals.  Again he returned to Southeast Asia and bulit a hospital in Muong Sing.  He  had two assistants working with him: Earl Rhine and Dwight Davis.  While his assistants work stayed in Muong Sing, Dooley went back home for surgery for melanoma.  While in the U.S. he went on a speaking tour to raise money.  He wrote his third book called The Night They Burned the Mountain and continued speaking in several countries for his cause.  He continued his mission work, and bulit yet another hospital in Ban Houei Sai, Laos. Dooley's health took a turn for the worse, and on January 18, 1961, Dooley died of cancer.
