Faith Journal

The first three weeks of the school year was more preparation than anything.  We talked about what this course would cover, and how each quarter would be broken up.  A major idea, as shown in the Eric Clapton video, and in Plato’s Allegory of the Cave, is the idea that we all have to come out of the dark, weather it is simply being more perceptive about society, like Socrates, or if it is killing an addiction to something, as we saw with Eric Clapton.  We also talked about hubris, and how it pertains to the current war in Iraq.  There was also an in class discussion where we tried to decide if certain behaviors were acceptable in different faiths, and that brought up a lot of good points.

1.)    One idea that was important was the idea of humans “being in the dark,” and I think that all of us can relate to that somehow, and we have to find out how to overcome that darkness.

2.)    We talked about hubris, and how it can be somewhat of a double-edged sword, in the sense that its good to have pride, but too much pride can get us into bad situations.

3.)    The final idea was the question of weather or not Holden Caulfield was a man of faith.  A lot of people disagreed, but everyone had good points, and it got us to start to think, “What is faith?”

My Question:  Is it acceptable for other faiths to punish or treat certain people differently than we do?  In other words, does the Catholic faith always do the right thing, and should we see other faiths as wrong for how they act?

I think the main thing I want myself to take from these couple weeks is the fact that we all have “dark spots,” and I want to try to look inside of myself and find out what those are for me.
