Faith Journal
This chapter dealt with the general idea of faith. It started by giving us a secular definition of faith, which stated that faith is strong loyalty. Then we received the Catholic definition of faith, which listed seven characteristics of faith, and gave a definition that had more to do with God. Next, the chapter stated reasons why faith is the best way, and it gave theories that oppose faith, such as nihilism and radicalism. Finally, we watched “The Mission,” which showed faith exhibited at its strongest form.
The first thing that I want to remember from this section is the fact that faith has many forms and characteristics, such as faith is a risk and faith seeks free human response. Also, I want to keep in mind that there are oppositions to faith, since previously I thought that everyone, even atheists, have faith in something. Finally, I want to remember all the ideas presented in “The Mission.” It showed how powerful and influential faith really can be, and it made me realize that sometimes to do the right thing means disobeying authority.
The one question that I would like to take with me from this chapter had to do with the videos we watched on Danny Meyer and the CEO of SAS. These were men who had faith in a vision, a cause, and through their extremely strong faith, they were able to create exactly what their vision was, even through the pressure of the corporate world tried to change that vision. So, since these men became so successful through having faith in their vision, how come we don’t see more men like this in the corporate world?
