New Variant H5N1: The flu virus has undergone antigenic shift and has surfaced in Hong Kong several times... Right now the new variant can infect bird to human but it wont be long before gene exchange occurs between human to human type flu viruses and human to animal types bringing about a virus that may be passed not only from humans but also from birds and the general population of this planet would have no immunity to it whatsoever... When the influenza virus has undergone antigenic shifts in the past, the pandemics created killed millions of people... This new plague has a 33% mortality rate and in some cases higher... One out of every three people who get it will die...

H5N1 Variant Influenza: Right now the FDA is working on a vaccine for the virus before it gets to the United States, with government cutbacks and the lack of knowlege of the virus, it wont be ready in time... If the virus becomes more virulent with the drifting of its structure through gene exchange then it could change the structure of our world as we know it...

Update:Recently there have been reputable reports that the flu virus has mutated again and can now spread throughout the body... I do not know if this includes the H5N1 strain or not, if someone knows then e-mail me... If it does, then this already lethal virus will be able to attack the kidneys and liver, instead of just the lungs and stomach... Perhaps resembling a hemorraghic fever... Continuing outbreaks in the Hong Kong area have been dealt with by China who basically kill everything infected... While brutal, it seems to be working... for now...

Update: January 13, 2004 There are reports of cases in Vietnam. This may indicate that the virus has re-emerged and has crossed China's border or has re-emerged in an entirely new area. With its disturbing ability to be carried by birds and with the new Southeast Asian Free Trade Zone this event should be watched closely.

Update: February 2, 2004 Most of this strain is not spreading from animal to human but there are reports that it is. There are reports of this strain in Germany.

Update: March 20, 2004 Now there is an H7N1 that is being contained in the east of the United States. So far only chickens have been effected.

Update: July 16, 2005 H5N1 is currently rampant throughout southeast asia. At this time, it still has not made the mutation to be spread from person to person. Even the main stream media has now picked up this story and governments prepare for the inevitable.
