| Riot (1996) Cast:Gary Daniels,Sugar Ray Leonard,Patrick Kilpatrick,Charles Napier,Paiger Rowland Gary Daniels stars as a mercenary who is sent in to rescue an English ambassador's daughter, he doesn't really need much convincing since the daughter is Daniels' ex-girlfriend. Despite having all the action take place during a riot that would have an aura of chaos as well as during Christmas eve, this movie disappoints mainly because it plays the material too safe. Riot certainly has all the elements of a great actioner on hand, it has a more then willing athlete in Gary Daniels, it has a top drawer cast of genre vets and most of all lots of action unfortunately though the movie works so well at building up our hopes for such an exciting conclusion that one is very disappointed that this movie fails to take risks with the material. What could've been a very fun actioner instead turns into a routine actioner that is superior as a vehicle for violence but little else. Yet, Riot remains one of Daniels' better films. Riot is well made , action packed and slick however it ironic that his most polished work is also one of his more disappointing. D. Joseph Merhi **1/2 |
