Over The Top (1987) Cast:Sylvester Stallone,Robert Loggia,Susan Blakely,David Mendenhall Mediocre Rocky clone which has Stallone as Lincoln Hawk who is out to prove his worth to his son by winning an arm wrestling tournament. I really can't fault this movie with a lower rating because seriously this is how good an arm wrestling movie can ever get. Let's face it, Sly has tried to reinvent himself and of course failed. Still it's more watchable than Cobra... Well what I wanna know is who really thinks an arm wrestling tournament can be rousing? Seriously now. Add in the usual training montage and scenes of Sly Stallone trying to sell the concept of arm wrestling and we have quite a movie on our hands. Those who have given this a horrible rating forget that Over The Top delivers exactly what it promises and furthermore that's commendable on a certain level. Unfortunately it doesn't make for great movie entertainment and watching Sly laboring to make this good is a constant uphill struggle. Although one must admit the climax itself is indeed not-bad but once again predictability comes into play and we know how this will turn out, sometimes movies can overcome this if it is exciting but arm wrestling is and never will be the kind of sport to get people cheering. So what were left with is a failed attempt at trying to do something that should never have been tried in the first place. D.Menhelm Golan** |
