Highlander (1986) Cast:Christopher Lambert,Sean Connery,Clancy Brown,Roxanne Hart Lambert stars as a immortal who can be killed only through decapitation as he prepares for a battle that has him going up against The Kurgan(Clancy Brown) a brutal immortal, who is the strongest immortal of them all. Mulcahy has a style that is not to be missed and Sean Connery has a memorable role as Lambert's mentor in this creative and quite remarkable movie which has become a classic. Some have complained that Highlander doesn't make sense because of the sequels, that the story is all over the map and as such shouldn't be watched while this is true that the sequels are all over the map, Highlander makes sense, has great actionscenes, gorgeous style that is just beautful to take in and of course features an appealing cast which sells the conept behind this movie. It indeed has surreal qualities (As do all the sequels) but it's because the movie moves so fast it rarely gives you time to breathe, infact the first swordfight is then followed by a big battlescene. Mulcahy's style really puts you in the middle of the action and along the way you find yourself engrossed in the story. The only real flaw this movie has is that it runs a tad too long. For instance Clancy Brown playing chicken with Roxanne Hart as his hostage, is an example of when Mulcahy's style seems to play overkill but along the way Highlander has build up so much momentum that we are excited by the climax and never ask any questions to the implausable things in the movie. Highlander is the work of a true artist and Mulcahy takes an imaginative story and proceeds to take it to the limit while giving us a beautiful movie to look at. D.Russel Mulcahy***1/2 |
