By Ricardo Pereira

Nelson Piquet after his retirement in F1 in the end of 1991 accepts a millionar offer from John Menard to drive the Lola Buick V6 in the 76th edition of the Indianapolis 500, Piquet was the 11th F1 great driver to participate in this famous event, after Alberto Ascari, Jack Brabham, Jim Clark, Jackie Stewart, Jochen Rindt, Denny Hulme, Graham Hill, Mario Andretti, Emerson Fittipaldi and Eddie Cheever.

Since the start of the practice sessions Piquet was always the fastest driver on track lapping the oval track in full throttle, this disrespect for the mitic track as Nelson Piquet confessed originate that the first thing that could went wrong, the crash into the wall over 350 Km/ h was a reality. And that was what really happned, Nelson suffered a concussion and several injuries to his lower legs. It seemed to be the end of a brilliant career, but one year later, after a slow and painful recovery, he came back to the same track to try again. That time the Buick engine blew during the race.
