This is my very first tutorial. I made the cane and took the pictures with the other hand so I hope they are easy to view.
Materials Needed:
Scrap clay
outline clay - 2 - 2oz bricks of black clay
outside clay - silver about 2 ounces(1 brick)
Start by gathering you scrap clay
You can sort or stack any way that pleases you |
||||
Roll the scrap clay into logs
approximately 5 inches long of
various widths. I made 20 logs
I have one log that is made up of clay scraps with gold leaf on. |
||||
Condition your main color to surround you logs. I chose black.. Roll out very thin to a size 5 or 6 on your pasta machine. Put a layer of black on each log and seal the joining seam.
Stack the canes together randomly
into a circular shape. I just laid them
out in line and kind of rolled them
together like a jelly roll adding others
if I needed to fill space.
Squeezed together to join the canes in a round log shape. |
||||
I now condition my silver clay and roll it out in sheets about size 5 on the pasta machine(fairly thin). Couldn't get a piece big and wide enough to cover the log so I pieced 2 sheets together. Joined and smoothed seams.
At this point my cane is roughly the
size of a 12 ounce can of Pepsi. You
can now let it sit for a day to cool or
reduce it down as distortion is not a
problem, in fact distortion in this
cane can be good.
Start reducing slightly from the center out by gently squeezing the middle uniformly around and working out to the ends. |
||||
Start rolling out your cane on your
work surface. I had to slice it into
fourths to be able to work with it. I
ended up with a LOT of different size
canes.
Make a slice and see your beautiful work. |

Here are a few of the finished slices
