Another Shell Cane

This cane was made using Sculpy III Clay.

Materials:
White, Yellow and Orange Sculpy III
Violet/Pearl mix clay
Black clay

Make a Skinner Blend of the white/yellow/orange clay going from white-yellow-orange-white-yellow-orange-white.

Take the blend and accordion pleat fold it with like colors together. Make the cuts shown in the picture.

Place the cut pieces side by side matching up the colors. Cut off the excess of the canes. This new cane
will be the fan folds of the shell.

After cutting off the ends. Press and slightly compact the cane together.

Press and taper the white-yellow section for the bottom of the shell.
You can see that the rest of the cane has been compressed slightly to remove air pockets.

Cut off the top corners and round off the edges.

Take the black clay and roll it out at #6 on the pasta machine or a very thin setting.
Make cuts in the clay as shown and insert the pieces of clay. Slice off the excess.

Continue in this manner until you have made a total of 10 slits and clay inserts in the clay balanced on equal sides of the cane.

Take a remaining piece of black clay rolled out at size 4 on the pasta machine(medium setting).
This piece will then be placed around the outside of the shell. Use a skewer to indent(press in)
the places where the black slices were placed in the cane. These will be filled in during another step.

Take the pearl clay and mix a small piece of violet to make a lavender pearl clay same size as the piece of black.
Cover the cane and press in the indentations again.

Take what is left over of the lavender pearl clay and make a rope piece. Slice into sections.
These will be used to fill in the indentations.

Place the lavender rope sections in the indentations.

This is a slice of the finished reduced cane. I forgot to take a picture before reducing.
You can see one more layer of clay on the outside. This is a sheet of pearl
with more violet in it to make it a deeper color. It was rolled out on the thickest setting #1.

Here is a votive candle holder using slices from both shell canes to decorate.
