Kindling
Here's Fruitopia collecting materials (straw) to build her nest.
It's around 11am on Saturday July 6th 2002. She ran around collecting the straw for a good 20 mins, although she's had her nest box for a good 4 days.
Now it's about 6:45pm on the same day, and Fruitopia is working away at pulling fur. Boy she's in a hurry! They must be coming soon.....
7:14pm, Fruitopia has her first baby after minimal contractions. She cleans them off as they come....1,2,3,4......
8 minutes have passed, and 8 babies later, Fruitopia jumps out of her nest box, and she is done kindling her litter. 8 squiggly mini rex kits, crawling to reach comfort in the nest.
Note: this pic was taken immediatly after. 4 Afterbirths were left behind, which you can see in this picture. No signs of peanuts, and all seem healthy!
Phatfurr's Fruitopia
Black/Gold Tri Doe
Below are pictures of one of my MiniRex doe preparing her nest, and kindling her babies. Please note, that majority of the time, does have their babies within 10-15 mins, and they are done. They also usually have them very early in the morning. However, this is not always true. I have been lucky enough to catch a couple of my does having their litter while I watch. A rabbits gestation period is 31 days, although a nest box should be available to the doe from the 26th day, to the 35th day from the breeding date. In Fruitoia's case, she delivered on the 30th day.
This is Fruitopia's first litter, making her a "first time doe". Although many say first time does are up to more challenges because this is their first time, I have not expereinced that. (Although I can beileve it, as it makes sense) However, I would have to say I have an equal amount of problems with my "proven" does, as my first timers. You will see by the bottom of this cage, how Fruiopia's first litter went....
