Oldham County was named the home team despite playing at South Oldham because of their #17 ranking and district play. They had earned a bye while SOHS had to beat Spencer County to get to this semifinal game. The two teams seemed to be tenative early on but things would heat up as play continued.
The Lady Dragons seemed to control much of the play in the first half as they continually advanced the ball putting their opponents on the defensive, but it was OC who drew first blood. With just under 27 minutes left in the first half, the Lady Colonels took a shot from the left side of the field which goalie Mariah Willard had to dive for. Although able to get both hands on the ball, she couldn't secure it and Oldham County netted the deflected shot for a 1-0 lead. South had a few more opportunities but couldn't finish and found themselves behind at halftime. Despite the score, the Lady Dragons had played well and looked to have a good chance to comeback in the second half.
Right from the start, SOHS gave notice to their opponents that they were not done as Shelby Thompson fired a nice shot from the left side that just missed wide. OC stepped up their game as well and the battle for offensive control of the ball seemed to even out in this period. With just under 26 minutes left in the game, South was awarded a free kick from about 30 yards out and just right of center. Katie Ferriell lifted a picture perfect lob to Ally Byrd who advanced from the left side to net a beautiful header and tie it up 1-1. The two rivals continued to play hard and each had some opportunities but the second half would end all even setting up two 10 minute overtime periods.
It didn't take long for South's gritty determination to pay off this time when just 2 minutes in, Shelby Thompson took a pass from Katie Fiser and fired a rocket of a shot 20 yards out from the right side which found the upper left corner of the net over the helpless OC goalie. The Lady Dragons took their first lead 2-1 and that is how the first of the two overtime periods would end.
Coach Tucker had substituted freely throughout the match and kept the South Oldham legs fresh. They continued to force the issue in the second overtime period, but OC broke through advancing the ball down the right side of the field for a shot that appeared to have significant topspin that fell in front of the goalie and bounced up and into the top of the net to tie it up again at 2-2 with 5 minutes to play. Neither team would score again and per tournament rules would play two (if needed) 5 minute "Sudden Victory" or "Golden Goal" periods.
To their credit, neither team let up. Both had good opportunites, especially off their respective corner kicks, but they would play two scoreless 5 minute periods and the game went to penalty kicks. OC began the series of nailbiter PK's making their first three as did Dylana Nalley, Shelby Thompson, and Ally Byrd for South Oldham. But SOHS goalie Mariah Willard blocked the Lady Colonel's fourth attempt opening the door for Emma Abney who made hers. Oldham County netted their 5th kick meaning South had to make theirs to win. All eyes were on Anna Brewer who calmly and confidently scored on her kick giving the Lady Dragons a 3-2 upset victory and a spot in the District 16 finals on Wednesday, October 10th against North Oldham.
CONGRATULATIONS LADY DRAGONS ON A HARD FOUGHT WIN!
