South Oldham over Christian Academy 4-0

North Oldham High School was the site for the 2007 Region 8 Title game tonight with the winner advancing to host the Sub-section 4 game next Tuesday, October 23rd. It was a comfortable fall evening for soccer featuring unranked South Oldham vs 20th ranked Christian Academy of Louisville. Since tournament play began in the District 16 opener, the Lady Dragons have played competitive soccer showing great determination and tonight was no exception as South reaped the rewards of their effort with a 4-0 shutout upset over the Lady Centurians.

The first half began with South Oldham taking control early on for the most part, keeping the ball on the east side of the field and pressing their opponents offensively. But it would take a little over 11 minutes before that effort would pay off when with 29:34 left in the first half, Sophomore Shelby Thompson took a pass from Dylana Nalley and kicked a line drive shot from the right side about 20 yards out into the upper left corner of the goal giving the Lady Dragons a 1-0 lead. SOHS would have another great opportunity to extend their lead later in the first period with a one-on-one shot against the Lady Centurian goalie who made the save by deflecting the shot and the half ended with South up 1-0.

Christian Academy seemed to step it up as the second half began, this time keeping South Oldham on the defensive and controlling the field of play for the first 10 minutes or so. With 30:20 left in the game, the Lady Dragons survived a scare when CAL netted an apparent tying goal. After a scrum in front of South's goal a lone Lady Centurian took a pass and found herself alone in front of Willard (South's goalie) and managed to kick it into the left side of the goal only to have the score nullified by an offsides call.

South responded with greater effort of their own and managed to take back control of the field of play thereafter. And with 25:17 left in the game, earned a corner kick that was lofted nicely into scoring position by Katie Ferriell, picked up by Ally Byrd who passed to Anna Brewer who netted it giving the Lady Dragons some breathing room with a 2-0 lead.

There would be no quit in the Christian Academy squad and the two teams continued to battle back and forth with both teams creating some opportunities and getting some corner kicks, but it would be the Lady Dragons who would score again when Nicole Ginthum took the ball deep down the right side of the field and crossed a slow roller back to about the '12 which Brooke Haysley picked up and netted giving SOHS a comfortable 3-0 lead with just 10:42 to play. With time running out Shelby Thompson put the icing on the cake when she fired another longshot, this one from the left side about 30 yards out, which found the net with only 5 seconds remaining. The Lady Dragons had shutout their opponents 4-0 and celebrated as Region 8 Champions.
