SOHS over Oldham County 1-0

Thanks to Larry Rueff for the following "Game Summary" !!

From the October 21st edition of The Courier Journal, Oldham County coach Dan Schulz was quoted as saying:
"I know it sounds clich'ed, but it's a flip of the coin when these two teams get on the field"
referring to tonight's Region 8 Final between his Lady Colonels and the Lady Dragons from South Oldham. Well, it was a close game, but the "coin toss" once again goes to the Lady Dragons who prevailed (1-0) as they have in every match between these two programs since 1993 and who, once again, successfully defend their Region 8 Championship, this time at Anderson County field.

Having beaten OC 1-0 in the regular season and again 2-1 in the District 15 final, SOHS knew it would be another hard fought battle and approached their cross county rival with the respect their #9 ranking deserved. Defense would rule the day in this match as it did in the previous two, and the Lady Dragon defense rose to the occasion to shutout Oldham County for the second time this season. The Lady Colonels finish out 2003 with only 4 losses, however 3 of those were to South Oldham.

In a hard fought back and forth game, it was team point leader Stephanie Hay who stepped up to make the difference offensively in the 36th minute of the second half. Hay, a senior, took control of a throw in by Kari Clark, beat her defender, and fired a solid spinning, turn around shot. It was a hard, beautiful kick from the left side that sailed over the head of the OCHS goalie that put her team up 1-0 and would prove to be the only score of the match.

The offense continued to pressure Oldham County and the midfielders controlled the flow of the game with Allison O'Bryan and Katie Moore shutting down their marks. The defense once again dominated their end with good plays by Michelle Huber (playing injured), Chelsea Rueff, Libbey Smith, and Ally Tucker in goal resulting in the team's 14th shutout of the season.

Named to the All Region Tournament Team were Stephanie Hay, Michelle Huber, Libbey Smith, and Ally Tucker. Congratulations to all the Lady Dragons and good luck Saturday against Elizabethtown. GO DRAGONS !!
