Mr and Mrs Jones want to have a family. However, they know that each of them carries a gene for cystic fibrosis. They have heard that it is possible for them to go on the in-vitro fertilisation programme and for their embryos to be screened for cystic fibrosis.
Before Mr and Mrs Jones decide whether they should take a risk and start a family naturally or whether they should use IVF, they need to gather information from experts. They decide to consult an expert in cystic fibrosis, a scientist, an ethicist and a reproductive technology specialist.
Your task as a group will be to become familiar with the issues surrounding genetic selection within a reproductive programme and also with the disease, cystic fibrosis. You will take on the roles of the experts and will make recommendations based upon your research. These recommendations must answer the following question:
"Should Mr and Mrs Jones take the risk of starting a family, and if they do, should they use genetic selection within a reproductive programme?"
