Petite Jamilla
The Bellydance Superstars and Desert Roses is a touring dance company put together and managed by Miles Copeland (brother to Stewart Copeland, drummer for The Police). Miles Copeland is a 3 time record label executive and producer of The Police, The Go Go's, The Bangles, Blondie, Fine Young Cannibals, Wall Of Voo Doo, REM, and Sting to name a few American artists. After growing up in the Middle East, he began his search for prospective Arab artists to put on the label and launched Mondo Melodia records where he signed such legends as: Cheb Mami, Hakim, Natacha Atlas, Rachid Taha, Nawal Al Zoughbi, Simon Shaheen and Waroud among others. After observing the popularity of this Arab pop culture, Miles began his newest project with the Bellydance Superstars signing on women in the U.S. as professional Bellydancers mainstreaming into the public eye for the first time in history. One of the first 12 to be on the tour, was myself, Petite Jamilla, from Birmingham Alabama. I was discovered by Miles when I performed as the "guest dancer" for the southern leg of their previous tour with Lollapalooza dancing in, both, Birmingham Alabama and Pensacola Florida with the company. As the youngest member of the tour, at 21 I am now an integral part of the show where I perform the Double Veil [consistantly a hit in 58 cities where I showcase Sufi like Trance Spinning with modern Rai and Arab Rap music for a unique blend], and creating controversy, as always, I am the only Dancer/Muscian in the show crossing cultures and combining Highland Sword and Fling dancing with Bellydance while playing the Scottish Highland Bagpipes to a Middle Eastern Song.  I have a touring schedule for nearly a year in advance. Don't forget to check out my tour journals at the link!
I am an artist first hand being the only Musician/Dancer with the company. I play Bagpipes with the show, but I have classical training with the B flat and Bass Clarinet, Dumbec, Tin Whistle, and Zills in addition to learning the Guitar, Piano and Didgeridoo. I have a collection of award winning writing and an extensive range of self composed experimental music (Tom Waits inspired) to my name. With commercials, T.V. shows, Instructional DVD's, modeling experience, and credits of musical accolades as a supporting muscian for produced albums, my interaction with this business is of diverse accounts. I hold the current positions of Treasurer and Secretary of MECDA Millennium Chapter and I am also Co-Owner of my mother's company, Bohemian Market.
I am proud to be sharing my talents with the world which has been made available to me through the priviledge of working with Miles on this project. I can be seen dancing locally (when I'm not touring) at Ali Baba's Persian Restaurant in Hoover Alabama on Thursday nights off Hwy 31 in Hoover by the Galleria (205-823-2222). I teach weekly calsses at the Pelham Dance Center (205-685-0777)on Lee and Industrial Street off Hwy 31 in Pelham Alabama.
