THE CASSOCK
(A Symbol of Christ)

Peter and Paul Ministries

The street garment of a Roman rite priest is called a cassock. In this age of increasing secularization and immorality, faithful priests wear the cassock as a sign of Christ’s love and contradiction to the world. The cassock has five buttons on the sleeves that symbolize the five holy wounds Christ bore on the cross. The cassock is a reminder of the price Christ paid for our sins. Cassocks come in various colors depending on the religious order or position in the Church. Parish priests wear black, the Pope wears white, Cardinals wear scarlet, and Monsigniors wear black with red piping.
