I was born in Santa Barbara, California in June, 1973 at Cottage Hospital. My parents are John and Carol Dell who have now been married for over 35 years now. My father was a newspaper writer for 26 years at the Santa Barbara News-Press. My mom works as a secretary. My brother, Graham, is a pilot and lives with his wife, Cristi, who is a physician specializing in Family Practice, and their three boys Evan, Travis and Zack. I was raised in Santa Barbara until I was 18 years old. I then moved to Sacramento for about six months then moved to Los Angeles to attend UCLA. I graduated in 1996 with a Bachelor of Arts in American Literature and Culture. I was a school teacher for 4 months before figuring out that teaching elementary school was not the job for me. I worked at UCLA Police Department for 6 years, and then attended medical school at UC San Francisco. I am now applying for residency positions in psychiatry. My Coming Out Story Still under construction . . .
Writing On October 12, 1992, TenPercentpublished "Still Gay After All These Years," a short story I wrote about going out with a woman and then making love to a man for the first time. My friend, Kate Kellams, was the editor that year and asked me to write about my experiences. The response I got was overwhelmingly positive. I continued writing for TenPercent for the remainder of that school year, writing also "Artistic Integrity." While writing for TenPercent, the editor of Campus Circle Newspaper called Kate and asked her if she had anyone writing for her that might want to write for her publication. I began writing for them while also writing for TenPercent. Rosemary Stevens from The Pink Sheet read a "Catch" and asked to publish it. I have continued writing for that publication.
In October of 1996, I received an email through UCLAs GayBruins
telling of an opportunity to publish in a new anthology. In
February, I received a letter from the editor telling me that a
story I had written had been chosen to be included. "Sixth Grade"
will by published in Back to School: Gay and Lesbian People
Revisit Their School Days edited by Kevin Jennings. It will be
published in Fall of 1997 by Alyson. In June, I also started recording some of the short stories I've written at KPFK, a Los Angeles Pacifica radio station. It's been a great medium to work in. The pieces, produced by Jon Beaupre and with technical wizardry by Christopher David Trentham, have been on IMRU, a 20 year old radio program for lesbians, gay men, and bisexuals. One of the pieces, "Catch," also aired on This Way Out, and internationally syndicated weekly radio program by and for queer people. Most recently, I finished a novel. The book is still in the draft stages. I will soon be looking for a publisher. The working title is The Legacy of the Brick.
