Zerub Baillie was born in Oxton, parish of Berwickshire, according to the birth record of his eldest son John. This is in accord with the 1881 Census which says that he was born "in Scotland". He was a cabinet maker. Zerub Baillie's father, according to statements by John Baillie (missionary to Swaziland) recorded in the South African Pioneer, was a shepherd. Yet the evidence collected so far suggests that it was actually John Baillie's great-grandfather that was the shepherd. Zerub Baillie married Jane Anderson on September 22, 1854 at Saint Cuthberts, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland. Zerub Baillie died in Sunderland (Durham, England) about 1890 (letters from Henry Grieve to John Baillie). To judge by the location of birth of his children, the family moved from Edinburgh to Sunderland in about 1865. There is no mention of Zerub Baillie Sr. in the British Census of 1851. The 1861 census provides the following: |

Note that the birthplaces in this record are confused. It says that Zerub was born in Cousland. In fact it was Jane who was born in Cousland, according to the birth record of her eldest son John. The 1851 census has the following data which may refer to the same Zerub Baillie: |

This record suggests that Zerub Baillie in 1851 was living with his parents in the Stockbridge area of Edinburgh, beside the Water of Leith. There is some doubt about the link-up, however: (i) Zerub's name is listed as "Zeneb" not "Zerub"; the surname is listed as "Bailey" not "Baillie" (not a strong objection because spellings were arbitrary before 1850); (ii) there is no record of the birth of Zerub or his sister Euphemia, and no later trace of her could be found. Nevertheless the link is plausible. Assuming the link to John Baillie and Isabella Tait is correct, there is one further observation on Zerub Baillie, namely from John's death certificate:
So as of 1863 Zerub Baillie was living at 55 Bristo Street, Edinburgh. Date of birth of Zerub Baillie: 1832 or 1833. John Baillie's birth record says that his father Zerub was 23 as of September 1855, making his birth year 1832. The 1861 census has him at 28 years in April 1861, making his birth year 1833. The 1851 census has him at 18 years in April 1851, making his birth year 1833 also (though see qualifier above). He was 65 at death (see below) in the March quarter of 1898, so that he could have been born between April 1832 and March 1833. Date of death of Zerub Baillie: The March quarter of 1898, according to his death registration. He was 65 at the time. Comment: The family lived with three children in a single room in a house. |
