Zerub Baillie was a shepherd. We think it was he to whom John Baillie (1855-1930), missionary to Swaziland, referred as his spiritual guide – viz. John Baillie’s great-grandfather, not grandfather as is recorded in an interview in The South African Pioneer in 1892. We have neither a birth certificate, nor a death certificate (there is no trace of the deaths of Zerubbabel Baillie or Agnes Taylor in the statutory records, 1855-1858), nor a marriage record for Zerub. (There is no trace of the marriage of Zerub Baillie and Agnes Taylor in the OPR index of Berwickshire or Midlothian.) Evidence comes from (1) the 1841 census, (2) the children’s birth records, and (3) the death record of son William Baillie. (1) The 1841 census for Channelkirk shows Zerub Baillie and Agnes Taylor at Hartside, with their youngest son Nichol. This is the only indication we have of the age of Zerub; he was born around 1781 – only approximate because ages are likely rounded down to multiples of 5. 1841 Census – Hartside, CHANNELKIRK, BEW [ref: 729-3-2]
Zerubbabel may have been born in Midlothian, perhaps in the near-by parish of Stow. The index to the OPR of deaths in Channelkirk (1730-1849) lists only a Robert Ballie in 1751, but it is possible that only those of sufficient means were registered. Alternatively, Zerubbabel and Agnes may have died in Stow, where their son William was living until at least 1846. (2) Births of their children recorded in Berwickshire, from OPR & OPR index:

(3) Death certificate of son William Baillie (1806 – 1858) provides confirmation that the father was indeed called 'Zerubbabel', and shows that both Zerubbabel Baillie and Agnes Taylor were deceased by 1858: William Baillie, 53, general merchant, d. 21.9.1858 at 23 Lauriston Place, Edinburgh Married* Father: decd.
