I asked my fellow classmates if they have ever had E-Coli, which many didn’t know what that is which led me to asking if they had gotten food poisoning before. An astounding 60% said they had gotten it before and only 40% had not. This goes to show that people either don’t pay attention to what they put in their mouths nor the taste of it and choose instead to just eat what is put in front of them without question.
When I asked if they knew anyone that had gotten either E-Coli or food poisoning 80% said that they do or did, usually friends around their ages or younger, and only 20%, which usually turned out to be older family members. These finding told me that the generations before ours, because of their upbringing, look at what they are eating because of the epidemics from within their life span has caused them to fall into the habit of making sure that everything was cooked thoroughly, where as, our generation could care less what it is and what it looks like as long as it is food. When I then asked how bad their cases were; mild, moderate, or horrible, I found that 60% said it was mild, 35% said that it was moderate, and only 5% said that it was horrible. Upon these finding I concluded that, even though our generation barely pays attention to what goes in our mouths, society makes sure that what we eat is up to par so to speak. Shortly after receiving these answers I asked people if they knew where they, and/or those they knew, had gotten it. After the many varied answers I got I was able to narrow it down to 75% of all the people received it from restaurants and 25% got it from other public areas such as schools. These findings led me to the conclusion that it is healthier and smarter to eat at home considering that was not once mentioned as the source of the illness. Curiosity got me to ask those who had gotten the illness how the had treated it. Shockingly the answers received were narrowed down to 50% did nothing put kick back and relax where as, the other 50% took antibiotics and other medications yet no one went to the hospital. After I gathered this information I asked those that had gotten either E-Coli or food poisoning if they knew what HUS is, and because of the group I had surveyed being students at high school, that 100% of them did not know what HUS is. This lets me know that our generation is poorly informed, even though I didn’t even know what HUS is until I read Toxin. |
