| Mid-Life Crisis Profile: A related topic in the novel Toxin is a mid-life crisis. The main character, Dr. Kim Reggis, has recently been divorced from his wife, Tracy. With whom he shares a daughter. He does not have sole custody of her, and sees her only when he can get a break from his busy workload. He is a cardiac surgeon. The term "mid-life crisis" was first coined by psychologist Carl Jung.(1) It was identified as an important and normal part of maturing as a person. The idea of a "mid-life crisis" is quite controversial, leaving many psychologists to choose one side or the other. A mid-life crisis is a condition that affects men and woman. This condition ussually occurs when the patient is around their forties, give or take twenty years.(1)Many psychologists think that this occurs due to psychological causes, and some think it is due to changes in the hormones. A mid-life crisis invovles changes in the emotional state of a person.(1) One is filled with doubt and anxiety, due to a variety of things.(1) Many of those affected find themselves looking back on their accomplishments thus far in life. Often with feelings that come up short of their original aspirations and dreams.(2) A person may be dissatisfied with their current lives, their careers, and even their partners.(2) The affects differ between men and women. The sypmtoms of a mid-life crisis are: increased irratability, a loss of itimate satisfaction, impotence(morely in male patients), fatigue, depression.(2) These symptoms alone do not necessarily mean one is going through a mid-life crisis, but the combination of these symptoms may provoke feelings of crisis in men.(2) In most studies, men experiencing a sense of mid-life crisis, suffered and got past this stage of life without any apparent difficulties. Though some evidence shows that those experiencing mid-life crises jumped wrecklessly. Some gave little thought to aging and retirement. (2) |
