Robin Cook's Biography |
Robin Cook: Biography What would you think if you picked up a novel written by a doctor and the words you read deal with a sick cow being sold for production to a slaughterhouse? These are the kinds of gruesome things that Dr. Robin Cook writes about. Robin Cook is a doctor, a writer, and a 66-year-old father. He has very blunt opinions on the medical field. Throughout this paper I will be exploring those key points and more. Cook was born May 4, 1940 in New York. He graduated from medical school at Columbia University and did post-graduate training at Harvard University to receive a degree in medicine. (1) Did you know, that he was a deep-sea diver at Jacques-Yves Causteau’s Oceanographic Institute? (2) He did this for a little while. He owns homes in Florida and Boston. He also has a home in Martha’s Vineyard. His son Cameron has “turned his life upside down.”(3) Speaking of fathers, Cook is said to be the founder of the genre that he still dominates today: the medical thriller genre. (4) Even though he is a critically acclaimed writer he still believes himself to be “a doctor that writes” as he told Jay McDonald. (5) Currently on leave from the Eyes and Ears Infirmary in Massachusetts, Cook is still writing away. Did you know that quite a few of his books had been made into films? In fact, a fellow doctor, Michael Crichton, directed the production of Coma. And on top of all of this, “Cook is a private member of the Woodrow Wilson Center’s Board of Trustees.”(6) These are members appointed to six-year terms by the President of the United States. Do you ever wonder where he gets his inspiration? It has been said he has an uncanny ability to anticipate national controversy, by writing about issues of current medical practice. For example, Shock, is a novel dealing with recent problems and developments with stem cell research. He was quoted as saying; “It’s going to make even the discovery of antibiotics pale in comparison.” Cook remains an avid writer and doctor for all to see or ask. This writing doctor will be around for years to come. |
