This section summarizes information useful to TGs in their daily life, as well as those taking steps towards changing their outward gender in Colorado.

Transgender persons should be aware of the following when out in public (taken in part from a talk given by Sgt. Howard of the CSPD in September 1997).  Generally, the no. 1 rule is, if you're presenting as a lady, act like a mature and responsible one!
  • It is legal to be dressed opposite to your genital sex [OGS], the exceptions being if criminal impersonation or intent to defraud is perceived.  Strictly speaking, the law states that persons with a penis use a mens' public rest room, those without use a womens' rest room.  This is supposedly true until SRS (sex reassignment surgery), or until the sex is changed on your driver's license. However, if dressed OGS, it's quite likely that using a public rest room OGS will cause the least disruption; be friendly and be quick!
  • If you are incarcerated while dressed OGS, the interpretation above will be used unless you have documentation to the contrary (see below);  even then, situations can be at the discretion of the governing official(s).
  • If pulled over by a traffic officer when dressed OGS, never lie to or hassle them;  explain that you are a transgendered person if your license and appearance are questioned.  If caught in situations such as the above, it's strongly recommended to have in your possession a letter from a psychologist stating that you are under their care for a transgender condition, and should be treated as your preferred gender.  If you have legally changed your name, keep a copy of the change decree in your possession.

To implement a formal name change in Colorado:

(1) Pay a visit to your local county court house; obtain the forms for an Adult Name Change from the clerk, fill them out and pay the associated fee.
(2) In about a week you will receive the paperwork needed for posting a legal name change notice in your local paper; it must be posted for three successive days.
(3) If the paper provides a statement of publication with clipping copies, bring it to the courthouse clerk; if not, bring the actual clippings. Pay yet another fee; the clerk will then give you the legal name change decree documentation.
(4) Make plenty of copies---you may need several notarized copies for work, financial affairs, etc.

To get a Colorado driver's license in your chosen identity, including gender designation:

(1) Obtain a letter from a doctor (MD) stating that you are intending to have sex reassignment surgery (SRS).
(2) Bring this letter, your existing license, and a copy of the name change decree (above) to the Department of Motor Vehicles, presenting the way you wish your picture to show you.
