EXCITEMENT SURROUNDS OPENING OF POOL WIFFLE BALL'S OFFICIAL SEASON For the second time in history, there will be an official season of Pool Wiffle Ball. The teams and captains are the same as two summers ago, with Pete Bertucci leading the Brooklawn Kosher Meats, Paul Holt of the Evans Farm Bagels, Mitch Gruber of the Bel Air Triangle Gefilte Fish, and Michael Jachles of the Meadowbrook Matzo. This year's teams were decided by a draft unlike the previous season's committee decided squads. First overall pick was a no-brainer, as Mitch Gruber took veteran reliever/robber Sean Dobbin. Pete Bertucci took Anders Makoski, an emerging star who thrived in his first season as a regular last year. Michael Jachles then shocked the world, taking rookie Greg Feltes, who will be making his Pool Wiffle Ball debut this season. An overjoyed Paul Holt then took Andy Osburn, who he was planning on taking even if he got first pick. Paul then took Mike Anthony with the first pick of the second round. This started a small run on juniors, as Jachles took Adam Gager and Pete took Brandon "Eurotrip" Rothschild. Gruber then selected Mike Hennessey, who will miss the regular season but could be huge if the Fish can somehow make the playoffs without him. Gruber took Boston Nyer with the first pick of the third round. Pete then took Robbie Ippolito and Jachles took veteran Stevie Collins, whose play has declined significantly since his marriage. Paul then took former Bagel Jay Fleming and "Any Girl," in the hopes of getting Anna Delaney on his team. Jachles rounded out his squad with Mike Bayer, another veteran whose playing time has been very limited in recent years. Pete took young slugger James Ryan and Mitch's team closed out the draft with Josh Willis, another rookie. The season is set to begin with a Memorial Day Doubleheader that pits Bel Air Triangle against Evans Farm at noon and Meadowbrook against Brooklawn at two. This will begin a three week, 12 game regular season. Each team will host two weeknight doubleheaders and two weekend day games, in a schedule that will be released shortly. After the 12 game regular season, the league will break for a week while the majority of its members are on vacation/wiffle ball conference in South Carolina. The top two teams will then advance to a best of seven World Series, set to begin Thursday June 29th. In other news, Jachles made the first transaction of the season, dropping Bayer and picking up veteran and former MVP Jacob Kriegler, who is in town for the weekend and will play for the Matzo on opening day. |
