“watcha havin young man?”, The lunch server would ask me, “ummm can I get a chicken patty, rice n’ gravy, and some mashed potatoes n’ gravy”. “Sure thing” he says. Everyday I ordered rice and gravy with my meals. People would think you’re crazy if you didn’t. On October 26th 2002 I had gone through my Normal ordering process and today was chicken patty day so I was very happy. As I sat down to eat my meal I noticed my friend Pete ordered rice with no gravy. “What’s wrong with you” I said to him. “I just like it with no gravy” Pete said. “Who orders just rice? You’re crazy man”. I also noticed that he had gotten grilled cheese instead of chicken patty. This was insanity I thought to myself. “How could someone not get chicken patty or rice and gravy in a meal?” He had committed a double sin. The rest of the student body agreed with me. Pete became an outcast. He was not allowed to sit in the senior section of the cafeteria because of his non eating chicken patties and rice and gravy. So a few weeks passed and Pete loved sitting with the underclassmen. He enjoyed sitting with the likes of James Ryan, whom he dubbed as “sweet”. The next chicken patty day came and we coaxed Pete into ordering chicken patty and Rice and Gravy. “How is it?” I asked. “Delicious” he replied. The town of Brighton rejoiced, for one of its native sons enjoyed a chicken patty with rice n’ gravy. The genius who invented rice n’ gravy could die happy knowing at least one boy enjoyed this meal. Pete was no longer “crazy” and could now eat with his fellow seniors. However, he continued to sit with the underclassmen because they are hilarious. Chicken patties were not that great but they were the best meal served by my high school cafeteria staff. Most people would not think about a conflict over rice and gravy and chicken patties but those people don’t know how delicious rice can be with gravy on it or how chicken patties with all the key ingredients can be the most delicious meal ever. |
