Web Assignment 6:
This I Believe

Over the past summer I had the opportunity to witness the largest spectacle viewed by mankind every four years. The FIFA World Cup 2006, in Germany, captivated me not only through the talented style of play but by the mix and connection of cultures. I believe in the uniting power of soccer.

In history, soccer has been the only thing capable of entertaining the masses, stopping wars, halting economies of the world, and bringing together people of every race, continent, and belief. The entire world now respects the game of soccer so much that a peace and common interest is held between all peoples of the world for one month; to watch "the beautiful game."

As a little boy growing up in St. Louis, soccer dominated the recess playing fields and I grew to love the game and the talent it required. It is simple to see, soccer brings people together. As a kid I could appreciate a quality goal even if it was for Mexico, USA's rival. I could share this feeling with friends and we could have a friendly, peaceful conversation about the exceptional footwork required in the goal.

At the actual World Cup games, I witnessed the wonder and awe of seeing an entire country come together to cheer their team on. At the US vs. Ghana game, American fans, whether they were black or white, Republican or Democrat, for the war in Iraq or against the war in Iraq, could all put aside their differences and cheer to see a good game. When Germany played against Sweden, I experienced one of the coolest feelings I have ever felt. The entire stadium was full of German fans, united, and cheering in unison for their beloved team and I became swallowed by a sea of red, black, and yellow flags.

In Germany, I not only saw the connection within one country, but between all soccer fans. Argentinian, Swedish, English, American, and German fans, all had respect for each other and the beauty of the game. No one looked down upon me as being American, in fact, the enjoyed the idea of soccer spreading to North America. In my hotel people from different countries would talk to each other about the previous day's games.

I was amazed when I went to the World Cup over the past summer by seeing all of the people and how unique each person was. It was unbelievable to see the cultures, attitudes, and world views of these people mix into a fun, peaceful event. After witnessing the power of seeing all of these soccer fans united under the game, I have come to the realization that I believe that soccer will one day, peacfully unite the world. 1
