Chapter One
Chapter One Journal

1.What is the one key idea of this chapter? Pay attention to the title of the chapter!
The main focus of chapter one is to show how we are all being called into a relationship with God and Jesus. The chapter teaches us how to read scripture and how scripture came to be. With the three steps of reading scripture I can easily evaluate how each Gospel or other inspired book of the canon affects me in my own life and my community. This understanding helps me to also understand Jesus' teachings. By learning that Jesus grew up reading the Hebrew Scriptures and by learning how the Gospels came to be I can understand more fully God's plans for His people. The New Testament is calling us into a relationship with Jesus in which we must help the world by trying to make a kingdom in the image of God and Jesus.
2. Write about two major ideas you want to remember. Write a short paragraph on each clearly stating the idea and then telling why you want to remember it.

One of the main points of the chapter I want to remember is the importance of the Pentecost Experience upon the followers of Jesus. In the Pentecost Experience the Holy Spirit descended upon Jesus' friends and filled them with the "courage to desert him no longer, with the wisdom to deny him no longer and with the energy and love to proclaim his message no matter what the cost." I believe that knowing how the inspired followers began to write on Jesus' teachings and spread the "good news" is necessary for reading the Bible, especially the New Testament, because it helps us understand who wrote the stories and why they wrote their stories.

The second main point I want to take with me from this chapter is that Jesus not only fulfilled the Old Covenant but in so doing this he created the New Covenant. Before I read how Jesus established a New Covenant I had not really thought about a covenant between God and me personally. Now I know there definitely is one so my relationship with God will become stronger. The New Covenant also emphasizes the importance of Jesus' sacrifice.

3. One image that captures the chapter for you.

4. One significant question you have from this chapter. It can be intellectual or personal
How am I going to personally help the creation of a Kingdom of God, here on earth?
5. Do one of the "Living the Gospel" questions at the end of the chapter. Write out the question, reflect upon it and write out your answer.
I hope that the world will be changed at least a tiny bit by the time I die, and that there will be a difference since the time I was born. I hope to help anyone and everyone I meet by either helping them with a math problem or making them feel good about themselves. By doing these little things I can help as Thea Bowman said and "light a candle." Maybe my doing something good will make other people do good things as well. The one little bit that I am going to do in the next week to really help people out is to go to the Children's Crisis Nursery right down the street from SLUH where I will help take care of little kids from families that are having difficult times right now. 1
