This is a comprehensive list of the best films of all time. Fifty-two best film lists were used as sources. Each time a film appeared on such a list it was given one point on this, comprehensive, list. In total, 1676 films received at least one point. In order to trim of fat the minimum point requirement was set at six--reducing the total amount of films to 231. Still quite a large number, but necessary to included many lesser known, foreign and new films which, many times, don't garner as many points as older, "classic" English language films. As for the method not all available best films lists were used. Those composed of customer polls like Amazon's were not included because of quality control reasons; the logic being only those who write about films for a living or care enough to built web sites about them are whose opinions should be counted in a list such as this. Quality control was also involved in another factor. Some lists were not used because the author didn't not include a wide variety of films across genres, time and languages. In short if the list was not made from a wide variety of films, it was not used. Lists composed by from people who work in the film industry but who are not critics like Reel Classics: Britain's Top 100 were not counted because those people would be more akin to vote on films they had worked on, thus skewing the scores. Some lists were not counted because they were just too big, like Peiro Scaruffi's site toping out at 1000 films! Do all these titles deserve to be recognized for excellence? Not likely. Other lists were not included because they consist of the best films for each year like Siskel and Ebert's Top Ten. Because films are considered to be the best of their year doesn't mean that they deserve to be remembered as some of the best films of all time. Including such lists would skew the scores more towards newer films. This same logic applies to why winners of the best picture at ceremonies, like the Motion Picture Academy Awards (aka The Oscar's), were also not include. This comprehensive list was composed during the summer of 2001. Hopefully, time will allow for me to updated it yearly. New lists that have popped up since then, including my own, My Favorite Films, will be added Shameless self plug, sure, but my list was good enough to appear on the Caldwell's list of Top 100 Movie Lists so I must be doing something right. Speaking of the Caldwell's I would like to thank them for constructing their excellent site. I would not have been able to find as many lists as I did if it were'nt for them.
