40 SAMSKAARAS

A Samskaara is that which refines and purifies the performer. There are 40 Samskaaras meant to uplift the Jivaatma to the Paramaatma. These are prescribed by the Smritis, based on Vedas. For the purification of mind,  these karmas have to be performed sincerely. The purified mind can then undertake Atma Vichaaram to attain Moksha.

Sl. Nos. 01 to 09 are to be done by the parents. The parents should see that their children do not blame them later for not doing these Samskaaras.

Sl. Nos. 10 to 13 are to be done by the Brahmacharies during Gurukulavaasam.
This duration is about 12 years.

Sl. Nos. 15 to 19 are the Pancha Mahaa Yajnaas, which every Grihastha has to perform daily. These are the most important Yajnas for a Grihastha.

Sl. Nos. 20 to 26 are the Paaka Yajnas. They are small yajnas.

Sl. Nos. 27 to 33 are the Havir Yajnas. They are more elaborate ones.

Sl. Nos. 34 to 40 are the Soma Yajnas. Here 'Saama Gaanam' is very important.

The Havir and Soma Yajnas ( Sl. Nos. 27 to 40 ) belong to the Shrouta Sutras. All the others come under the Grihya Sutras.

There are some more prevalent Samskaaras which are not covered in the above mentioned 40 :

Karnabheda - Piercing the ears.

Vidya Aarambha - Commencement of studies by writing the alphabets.

Antyeshti - Dahanam (Cremation) of the dead body through fire. This is also a Yajna performed by the eldest son. There is no other Samskara thereafter for this body.

While doing the Homam for the Devatas we say "Swaahaa".

While doing the Homam for the Pitrus we say "Swatha".

Oupaasanam

Oupaasanam has to be performed daily. This comes under the Paaka Yajnas, though not mentioned above. This is a Fire-yajna that starts from the day of one's marriage and continues till his death. This homam has to be performed by the husband and wife together daily. Since it is connected with 'Upaasana', it is called Oupaasanam. 'Akshatai' (Rice) is used for doing this homam. If the husband is out of station, his wife has got the full right and duty for doing this homam. This homam will prevent evil spirits from entering the house.
