One of the greatest Gujarati poet-saints, Narsi Mehata introduced philosophical poetry into the bhakti world of Gujarat. He composed about 740 songs. 'Vaishnava-janato', the prayer song popularised by Mahatma Gandhi, is a composition of Narsi mehta's. He was an exemplary devotee of Lord krishna. He went through several misfortunes but not once was he forsaken by his Lord Krishna. For this illustrious devotee of His, the Lord appeared in person before one of his creditors and honoured his cheque (promisory note).
