Simona Amanar was born in Constanta on October 7, 1979. Her father Vasile is a technician at a shipyard & her mother Sofia is a housewife. She has a younger brother named Adrian. Simona began gymnasts at the age of 6 at CSS Farul Constanta. In 1992 she moved to the national training center in Deva with her coach, Nicolae Forminte. Simona's favorite event is the vault & her idols include Camelia Voinea, Daniela Silivas & Shannon Miller. In her free time, Simona enjoys reading & watching movies. She likes adventure novels & science fiction books. Her favorite actor is Jean Claude van Damme. Simona finished high school in 1997 where her favorite subject was Romanian. The place she has visited that she liked the most is Walt Disney Land in the USA. At the age of 16, Simona was 4'9" tall & weighed 77 pounds. After the retirement of Gina Gogean in 1998, Simona became the team leader. She led her team to their 4th. consecutive world title in 1999, but had a disappointing all around finish. In 1996 & 1998 she competed abroad for the Gal Lissone team in Italy. Currently, Simona is nearly 21 years old & is 5'0" tall & 98 pounds (1,53m & 44 kg). In 2000, she made her 2nd. Olympic team, where after the disqualification of her teammate Andreea Raducan, Simona won the gold medal. Before the Romanian team even left Sydney, she announced her retirement. She was nearly 21 years old.
